FAQs

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Originally called “Controlology,” Pilates designed the program to help aid the rehabilitation of German nationals in British internment camps struck with wartime disease and physical injury during WWI .  He taught his fellow camp members concepts and exercises developed over 20 years of self-study and apprenticeship in yoga, Zen, and ancient Greek and Roman physical regimens. His philosophy behind the program was that mental and physical wellness were interconnected, and a system which addressed both components would enhance overall wellness and help people return to their daily lives.IMG_2241

Pilates uses a variety of apparatus for resistance, stretching, and endurance work with emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core for improvement in coordination and balance.

What do I wear?

Like many exercise programs, you want to wear comfortable clothes that you can move in easily, such as leggings, yoga pants, tank tops, t-shirts, or shorts. As pilates is focused on alignment and precision of movement, avoid wearing baggy clothes like sweats that hide your body’s position and movement. Pilates is traditionally done barefoot, however we strongly recommend non-slip Pilates or Yoga socks. If your feet have a tendency to get cold easily, be sure to wear socks with grips on the bottom so you don’t slide.

Do I have to take a private session before I take a class?

While not required, we strongly encourage new clients, regardless of previous Pilates experience, to take at least one private session with one of our trainers before taking a class in order to learn our current routine and to give our team an opportunity to identify any particular areas to work on.  Our “Intro to MAC Body” package is specifically designed for anyone new to Pilates to get the dedicated attention and orientation provided in both private and semi-private sessions before joining our MAC Pilates Complete classes.
